Regulatory body within the medical profession requires an experienced Information Policy Advisor to
provide advanced specialist knowledge and consultancy in all areas of Information Governance.
Main responsibilities
Develop policy, guidance, procedures and training materials on information governance matters including the Data Protection Act 1998, the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004.
Work closely with staff across the organisation to ensure that information governance standards are understood and adhered to.
Undertake compliance work including taking responsibility for notification to the Information Commissioner, maintaining the publication scheme and auditing information governance activities.
Gives advice, presentations and training to colleagues on information governance issues.
Keep up-to-date with relevant professional developments and promotes best practice throughout the organisation.
Assist with investigations into complaints about breaches of the Acts. Compiles and presents statistical information.
Contributes to the continuous improvement of the Information Systems Section’s effectiveness by reviewing procedures and performance.
Responds to enquiries from members of the public, colleagues and external organisations.
Key skills
The post holder must be able to analyse and summarise complex technical information and communicate it to others in plain English..
The post holder must have the experience and ability to work within a framework bound by statutory and other regulations and the ability to interpret and apply them appropriately.
The post holder must have direct experience in an Information Governance role. The post holder must have knowledge and understanding of the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act and the importance of maintaining confidentiality at all times. An ISEB qualification in Data Protection and/or Freedom on Information would be desirable
Effective use of IT Systems: MS Word, MS Excel and Outlook are widely used
The ability to draft policy documents, briefings, guidance notes and letters.
Work effectively with staff at all levels, as well as members of the public.
The post holder must have excellent planning skills and be able to prioritise their work to meet conflicting deadlines and deal with urgent or short notice issues. They must be sufficiently flexible to deal with unexpected priorities whilst also meeting long term priorities.
The post holder must be capable of working on their own initiative and must be able to make recommendations and take decisions on the detail of information requests as well as helping to develop policy and strategy.
